Here's some background: Prometheus is a Titan god of fire who is credited with the creation of humanity from clay, and who defies the gods by stealing fire and giving it to humanity as a civilization. Prometheus is known for his intelligence and for being a champion of humankind and is also seen as the author of the human arts and sciences generally.
Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, sentenced Prometheus to eternal torment for his transgression. Prometheus was bound to a rock, and an eagle—the emblem of Zeus—was sent to eat his liver in ancient Greece, the liver was often thought to be the seat of human emotions. His liver would then grow back overnight, only to be eaten again the next day in an ongoing cycle.
Prometheus was eventually freed by the hero Heracles. With that in mind, Gide creates another form of torture, whereas Zeus - called a "miglionaire" and a rich banker - drops a handkerchief in the street. Whoever picks up the handkerchief, Zeus asks for the address of someone he knows. Zeus then punches the man who picks up the handkerchief and sends a twenty-pound note - which in the late nineteenth century was a large sum - to the man in the address.
Prometheus meets a waiter at a Parisian cafe who likes to seat random people at tables of three. The idea is for the three strangers to start a conversation and develop a relationship. The waiter seats Prometheus at a table with Damocles - who's tortured by the fact that he feels indebted to whoever sent him a twenty-pond note, and Cocles - who was punched by Zeus. The conversation ends when Prometheus' eagle arrives and eats one of Cocles' eyes.
After an assembly in which Prometheus claims: "So I gave them Fire, flame and all the arts which a flame nourishes. By warming their minds, I brought forth the devouring faith in progress Man's happiness grew less and less - but that was nothing to me. The eagle was born, gentlemen! I loved men no more, I loved what fed on them. The eagle comes every day to feed on his liver, so the eagle flourishes and becomes large and full of feathers. The eagle grew in strength, and Prometheus loses a lot of weight, so eventually, the eagle flies Prometheus out of jail and into freedom.
Them Damocles falls ill and dies. At his funeral, Prometheus declares: "Do not look for too much meaning in all this. I wanted above all to distract you, and I am happy to have done so: surely I owed you that. It reads in about an hour. I definitively enjoyed it but would have liked for Gide to develop his characters more. I thought he had not exaggerated his idea enough! Mar 27, Rebecca Pithion added it. Es sin duda un libro para tener cerca y poder releer.
Jul 29, Mickey rated it it was ok.
Jan 08, JSS rated it it was amazing. Such a huge words this book has to say.

Gide's career ranged from its beginnings in the symbolist movement, to the advent of anticolonialism between the two World Wars. Known for his fiction as well as his autobiographical works, Gide exposes to public view the conflict and eventual reconciliation between the two sides of his personality, split apart by a straight-laced education and a narrow social moralism.
Gide's work can be seen as an investigation of freedom and empowerment in the face of moralistic and puritan constraints, and gravitates around his continuous effort to achieve intellectual honesty.
His self-exploratory texts reflect his search of how to be fully oneself, even to the point of owning one's sexual nature, without at the same time betraying one's values. His political activity is informed by the same ethos, as suggested by his repudiation of communism after his voyage to the USSR. Need another excuse to treat yourself to a new book this week?
